Scotland’s tax is progressive

Scotland’s personal tax is progressive, and quite low when you compare it with France – or many other European countries.

Compared to England, people who are less well off pay less tax in Scotland. It is only when incomes get really high that people in Scotland may more tax. This is a “progressive” approach that helps to reduce income inequality – which is a big issue in the UK that neither Westminster party has addressed.

In many European countries – including France – governments have chosen to charge much higher personal tax. But in return this means that they can deliver much better public services. By taking the same approach when Scotland regains independence, NHS and Social Care could be properly funded, as well as Local Councils and their local services. Scotland could invest much more in building the social housing it needs – in both rural areas and cities.
