Purpose
This site is full of graphic independence messages. We created it as a free resource for the Scottish Independence Movement, and for those who aren’t “Yes” yet. It’s purpose is to provide useful and visual insight into the topics that matter.
This resource – and all its graphic messages – are free to re-use and share (see below for the License to Use). You can also request editable files.
Understand key information faster
Did you recently read an article, report, or campaign paper – or have a conversation with someone about a complicated aspect of Scottish Independence – and think, ‘I wish there was something simple to understand this, instead of a lengthy description’? Written text and spoken words are often full of awkward, complicated, descriptions.
Often, to understand a complicated message across, a simple diagram, chart or other data visualisation will do the job. This is particularly true if you have a limited time to digest information. Data visualisation helps people understand information faster. And if this information is part of a complicated set of data, that’s really important. Otherwise you end up only seeing someone else’s headlines – superficial points that someone else is making to you. It becomes impossible to make your own mind up in an objective way.
Share what you learn more easily
Data visualisation is the end of a process. To create one you start with the data, analyse it, then analyse it some more. You search for the insights that might persuade people and, if you’re able to find them, you must present those insights in a way that people get at a glance.
Understanding this process means you must also understand how the message or insight was arrived at. It gives you that knowledge to make you confident to share what you have learned.
History
Over time the author has captured many sets of data relevant to the theme of Scotland and regaining its Independence – and gone through the process of analysis, insight, and visualisation described above. These have proved popular with many people who want to get behind the misleading – or, frankly, untrue – reports from the UK media. People who want to make their own minds up, rather than being told what to think. Eventually we created this site to capture all these insights and make them more accessible. It continues to grow and new insights are constantly being posted.
