What if all cars were the same price as a Rolls Royce? That’s what the UK Government does with energy bills. People in Scotland pay the price of the most expensive energy source, even though Scotland’s own energy from renewables is the cheapest available.
Currently people in the UK pay the highest prices in Europe for their electricity.
Scotland can generate more renewable energy than it needs. The UK Government sets energy prices based on the cost of the most expensive source – gas. If Scotland were independent, energy bills would drop enormously as they’d be set based on the price of renewables. In fact currently electricity from renewable sources is about nine times cheaper to generate than electricity from gas powered generators.
Of course it doesn’t help that electricity supply companies make vast profits, rather than reducing their bills – but that’s a different story.
