A growing collection of cartoons and graphics adapting Tory messages in Scotland, rather than being particularly about Independence.
Scottish Conservative Conferences – always worth a look
Highlight of the February 2024 conference in Aberdeen was of course the venue sharing with a George Michael tribute band (ticket sales were too low to fill it, apparently).
But the keynote speeches were less than exciting too – with lots of “could” “should” and “may” from the Westminster crowd shipped up for the day.
Democracy under fire
In March 2024, and following the election of George Galloway as an MP, Sunak decided that it was vital to hold an urgent speech outside No.10. This may not have been how the BBC subtitled it, but it captures the sentiment of his speech – with threats to remove visas from people protesting against Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The Holyrood bunch
“Three jobs Ross” may be giving up his part time role as MP in Westminster, but he’ll still be at Holyrood for some time to come. At least he’s honest.
Labour and the Tories
It’s been clear for some time that Starmer has ditched many traditional Labour policies and adopted ones very similar to those the Tory party support. This is so he can appeal to right wing swing voters in England – which Labour feels are vital for them to have their turn at power in Westminster.
Of course, just like Labour, the Tory branch office is the last to know about Tory policies and its relationship with Labour. As we know, the two unionist parties quite often prop each other up in Scottish Councils, so this sort of unionist love-in shouldn’t be a surprise.
The Westminster mob
Penny Maudant famously likes to dress up in naval uniform to impress the voters in Portsmouth. But she dresses as a Captain when in fact she’s an acting sub-lieutenant in the Navy Reserve, with zero experience of actual deployments.
David Mundell is MP for Dumfries and Galloway – but he always votes as he’s told. This includes voting to prevent English water companies from cleaning up their sewage-ridden water supplies. For this we’ve awarded him the Tory Sewage Award. He looks so pleased, bless.
Alister Jack managed to displace David Mundell as Scottish Secretary and fully fulfilled the potential of the role, ensuring successes like the vetoing of the Scottish Government’s Gender Recognition Reform bill, as well as its Deposit Return Scheme. For these “successes” he certainly deserved his 2023 award:
Rishi Sunak was yet another failing Tory PM. He successfully demonstrated the tail end of a failing time in power for the Tories:
The 5 Priorities
Anyone remember Sunak’s 5 Priorities? He was always proud to claim success in them. Didn’t he do well?
But of course the Tories were always keen to acknowledge reality:
