Scotland is a relatively well off part of the UK – so where does its wealth go?
GDP (income) and Wealth are different – but related. Wealth often comes from amassing income. So where does Scotland’s GDP (income) go – who gets to amass it and increase their wealth?
Looking at GDP by Region Scotland is third after London and South East England in the amount of income it generates for people and business. This is because Scotland is a rich exporter of energy, products such as whisky, and services. But that income heads south. When it comes to wealth Scotland drops down significantly – and London and South East of England dominate.
In an independent Scotland we can expect more wealth to remain in Scotland, and for income and wealth inequality to decrease.
