Scotland is one of the best educated nations in Europe. This doesn’t happen by accident, or overnight. For many years Scottish Governments have prioritised investment in education, and have continued to support an education system that encourages inclusion rather than allowing exclusion. Private academies and grammar schools largley don’t exist; private schools are increasingly rare and do not benefit from the tax perks they receive in England; and the Scottish approach to education high school education encourages generalisation to a later age and a broad “baccalaureate” system of highers.
What’s more university tuition fees for Scottish students are funded by the Scottish Government – and loans for living costs are at a much lower interest rate than those offered to English students.
